Chinese EV maker BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) filed a lawsuit on 26 January in the US Court of International Trade at New York, challenging the authority of US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and seeking a refund of tariffs imposed since April 2025, according to Reuters.

This marks the first time BYD COMPANY has used legal action in response, following similar lawsuits by thousands of global companies with US operations. BYD COMPANY stated that the lawsuit aims to protect its right to reclaim the tariffs it has already paid.
